Estate Agents, Compliance and the Beautiful Game

28th June 2019

Money laundering is in the news again, and the reach is wide. This time, Belgian football club Anderlecht is caught up in the controversy.  Belgian police officers raided the offices of Anderlecht and the national football association as part of an investigation into money laundering involving agents and player transfers. The 2015 deal for Serbian striker Alexsandar Mitrovic is rumoured to be one factor that prompted the raid.

Politicians, banks, even private schools across the globe are under scrutiny in the fight against money laundering.

Making sure you’re compliant is the single most important thing you can do to protect your firm from fines, ex-communication from the HMRC and even imprisonment.

With all the other duties and joys of helping people move into their new home, compliance is a headache you can do without. However, ignoring your legislative responsibilities isn’t the way to go about it. We speak to estate agents every day who still do not understand the importance of staying compliant. Many do not know how to be compliant. We can’t stress enough being hazy on the details is a shortcut to yet another Disgraced Estate Agent headline.

At Landmark, we’re always looking for ways to make it easier for you to be compliant. It’s not just about getting to grips with current legislation. Within seven months, you’ll also have to be familiar with the new 5th AML Directive.
